What is Early Childhood Education (ECE)?
Shonkoff & Phillips, (2000) defined Early Childhood Education (ECE) as the learning that takes place from birth to around eight years old. This is a very important time in a child's life because their brains grow quickly, and they start to develop important skills. ECE programs help children learn through activities like play, storytelling, singing, and working with others. The goal is to help children develop their minds, social skills, and emotions so they are ready for school and life.

Why is Early Childhood Education Important?

Early Childhood Education is important because it builds the foundation for a child’s future. Research shows that children who attend early education programs do better in school and have stronger social skills. For example, children in Early Childhood Education programs learn to communicate, solve problems, and work with others. These skills help them as they grow older and face more complex challenges in school.

Examples of Early Childhood Education provided by UNESCO. (2010).

Preschool Programs

In countries like southern African ones / worldwide, children attend preschool around the ages of 3 or 4.

During preschool, children are introduced to basic concepts like numbers, colors, and shapes, while also learning how to play with others.

Daycare Centers, some working parents send their children to daycare, where trained teachers help children learn through activities like arts and crafts, reading stories, and playing games.

Home-Based Learning

In some cases, parents teach their children at home using fun activities like singing songs, reading books, or playing education.
